Fleur de Lis on Pearls

All New Orleans natives are born with a fleur de lis pacifier in their mouths. And it’s not to root for the Saints, it’s bigger than that.

A dominant emblem of the coat-of-arms of the French Royal family since 466 AD, the fleur de lis was the favorite decorative adornment of the Sun King, Louis XIV (1638-1715), for whom Louisiana is named.  He incorporated the fleur de lis motif (three floral segments tied by an encircling band) on his crown, the French flag, his royal robes, official china, and palace furnishings.  The motif was introduced to Louisiana by French explorer, de La Salle, in 1682. The flag of the State of Louisiana and the seal of the City of New Orleans both incorporate the fleur de lis as the dominant design motif.  The fleur de lis continues as a popular motif in Louisiana in testimony to its French heritage.
